I’m always looking forward to the weeknights and weekends for many reasons. Obviously, one reason is to get away from the patients and routines that, let’s face it, sometimes drive me crazy. Another reason is to lounge for hours on my couch while eating ice cream and looking terrifying in a face mask. But I digress…

There’s something that’s gravely missing from my day-to-day life as a hygienist. That something is fashion. Cute clothes. Fun outfits. Feeling stylish. Don’t get me wrong, I love the convenience of throwing on our unique ‘pajamas’ of sorts and never once having to think about my outfit. It’s a gift. But it’s also causing me to overdress for the most basic of life’s circumstances. No one needs to see me in a ball gown at a grocery store.

Is dressing stylishly something that will help us become more intelligent or learn anything of true clinical value? No. But we’re going to talk about the human side of dentistry today because, the truth is, we are humans underneath our clinical exterior.

Style matters. Looking appropriate and professional is the first thing your patients and coworkers will see, and this sets the tone for your confidence and others’ confidence in you.

So, without further ado, let’s up our scrub game and bring some style to scaling.

1) Ditch the standard, embrace the jogger

If you’ve been fighting the jogger scrub bottoms, it’s time to give in. Not only are the joggers much trendier, but they also allow for a more relaxed fit, and you no longer have to worry about the bottom of the pants getting frayed and dirty from touching the ground.

2) Be bold

If you see photos of runway outfits, you’ll find they are often saturated with beautiful, bright colors. What’s more, each year in fashion has its own ‘color scheme,’ and 2024 is full of fun options. Finding scrubs in cherry red, orange of any shade, and pistachio green will keep you right on trend with this year’s vibes.

Cherry red: Red is known to be a powerful and stimulating color, so wear it with confidence and expect it to bring out some passion in your work that you may not have known was there!

Look no further than the much-loved FIGS brand’s cherry red trendy crew neck top and jogger bottoms that will leave you looking snatched.

Any shade of orange: Terracotta, peach, apricot – so many options! All manner of orange is acceptable and much loved in 2024. Orange is often associated with energy, playfulness, and cheerfulness. If you’re at a pediatric office, you’re bound to be bringing up the fun level with the kids when you’re wearing orange.

WhisperLite has various kinds of orange scrubs and is known for their discounts and fabulously soft material.

Pistachio or sage green: Green often brings up feelings of calmness and peace since it’s associated with nature in our brains. It also symbolizes wealth and prosperity, so obviously, you’ll be on your top game when you’re wearing your sage scrubs.

Mediclo is an excellent scrub resource, with plentiful colors and styles available. Their sage green modern banded collar top somehow hits different. Maybe it’s the double pockets because, let’s be honest, we love our pockets.

As a bonus, Mediclo focuses on making sustainable and environmentally friendly pieces. Their scrubs contain recycled polyester and Tencel, a fiber made from wood chips from responsibly harvested trees. They’re dedicated to lowering their carbon footprint and promoting sustainability. My personal favorite – Coral: Why is this color my personal favorite? Coral is a color that can immediately make skin in the dead of winter appear to be sun-kissed. It’s truly magical. It is a universal color that looks good on almost any hair color and skin tone. It is always a good choice. Choose coral. This is the way.

Welles is a scrub brand praised for its breathability and lightweight fabrics. They carry a beautiful coral option in several different cuts and styles.

3) Try something new

Scrubs are something that rarely change, so there’s only so much we can do to help style ourselves in a way that feels unique and fun. A couple of fun trends that recently caught my eye are jumpsuits and the mandarin collar.

Jumpsuits: I feel like I’ve won the lottery when I find a good jumpsuit. A great jumpsuit adds a layer of comfort and fluidity that two pieces can never provide, and a sense of style that doesn’t quit. These FIGS jumpsuits will have you looking and feeling like a boss in no time.

Mandarin collar: Ditch the old simple crew neck cut and try a much more fashionable mandarin collar option. Trust me. You won’t go back.
