We may be a bit partial as a dental hygiene publication, but we think dental hygienists are awesome people! So, just for fun, here are six reasons to date or marry a hygienist!
1) Dental Hygienists are well-educated
Dental hygienists are not simply “tooth scrapers,” but instead college-educated health care professionals. College courses like biology, microbiology, anatomy and physiology, chemistry, and nutrition, among others, are required before even entering a dental hygiene program, which itself is rigorous! After courses in pharmacology, head and neck anatomy, dental embryology and histology, oral pathology, periodontology, and so on, here come the multiple board exams. However, it doesn’t end there, as continuing education courses are required for ongoing relicensure. In short, if you date or marry a hygienist, your significant other is well-educated!
2) Hygienists have time for date night
Generally speaking, hygienists work more along the lines of business hours – no graveyard shifts or working all weekend. They also can’t exactly take their work home with them. It’s also highly unlikely that a dental hygienist will be on call for a hygiene emergency. This means there just might be time for date night! Additionally, dental offices are often closed on major holidays, so holidays can be enjoyed together!
3) Hygienists will help you take care of your oral hygiene
Have you found yourself not cleaning in between your teeth enough? Or maybe you go to bed without brushing your teeth? Regardless of any less-than-stellar habits you may have regarding your oral hygiene, a hygienist to the rescue! Hygienists won’t just harp on you to take better care of your mouth. They will actually teach you proper techniques and explain the importance of good oral health. (Hint: bacteria, inflammation, infection, oh my!) If you date or marry a dental hygienist, your oral health is likely to improve, which can help improve overall health!
4) Hygienists pay attention to detail
Hygienists tend to be very detail-oriented. Something stuck between your teeth? Hygienists will always be the first to point it out when no one else will. This isn’t about calling you out – they just can’t help but notice. It’s nice to have someone with attention to detail around to point out the more embarrassing things in life, especially when you are in public! Being detail-oriented is a positive quality for other reasons, too. Some might say it can also help when it comes to relationships, especially when it comes to active listening, which brings us to our next point.
5) Hygienists have caring personalities and listen
A dental hygienist likely chose their career path because they want to help and care for people. Sometimes, they care more about a patient’s oral health than the patient might! Caring for patients requires excellent listening skills, whether taking a patient’s medical history, understanding their dental concerns, or building trust with someone apprehensive about the dental office. Even with the occasional patient who may be more challenging (likely due to dental fear or negative past experiences), a hygienist remains patient and understanding. If you want someone who actively listens and is caring, a hygienist is a great bet!
6) You will always have a toothbrush and other oral hygiene essentials
It isn’t very unlikely that you will come across a dental hygienist who doesn’t have a plethora of different types of toothbrushes, toothpaste, or floss (and other types of products used to clean between your teeth) on the ready. For many hygienists, they’ve got to try oral hygiene products themselves before they recommend something to a patient. Dental manufacturers offer samples to dental professionals for this very reason. It goes to the saying, “Gotta try before you buy,” or recommend to patients, in this case. If you date or marry a hygienist, you will have just what you need to maintain your oral health.
In Closing
Dating or marrying a dental hygienist is fabulous! They are well-educated and detail-oriented.
Hygienists are patient, caring, and great listeners. Most importantly, they can’t help being there for people. If you ever need someone to depend on, a dental hygienist will be there for you!
